GenerOs™ EX Limb Lengthener...

The Device
GenerOs EX is a patented, implantable long bone distraction device made of surgical grade stainless steel. It employs similar technology as GenerOs CF with some adaptations that make it suitable for withstanding the forces required for DO of the legs and arms.

GenerOs EX has a transcutaneous pin for activating the device that does not cause excessive scarring because it is located on the proximal side (closest to the trunk of the body) of the distraction movement. This pin is removed once the Consolidation Phase begins and the rest of the supporting structure is left until consolidation is complete. The two blocks that are fixated to the bone are moved apart by a drive shaft with a thread pitch ratio of one turn causing one millimeter of distraction. The device forms a partial circumferential structure around the bone to withstand the various forces associated with ambulation, though patients are advised to move about only with crutches.

GenerOs EX for the femur will distract up to 75 millimeter (three inches). After consolidation, the device is removed in a second operation.

While GenerOs EX has been cleared by the FDA for widespread clinical use, it is currently undergoing minor modifications to further enhance clinical adaptability. OrthoNetx anticipates that GenerOs EX will soon be available to orthopedic surgeons nationwide.
